This week I set Year 4 a challenge to make a bulb light brighter, I gave them lots of equipment and just asked them to investigate, and they did!

Welcome Back!

Wednesday 9th September
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Welcome back and welcome to Year 4! I hope you all had a super summer.
Here is some important information for this upcoming term.
P.E.
Monday, children will need outdoor kits and suitable footwear e.g. trainers or pumps.

Swimming
Friday, children will need a swimming costume, towel and goggles if wanted. Can I recommend that girls tie their hair up and boys wear swimming trunks instead of baggy shorts (swimming will start Friday 18th September)

Spellings and Learn its
New spellings and Learn its will be given every Monday (starting from 14th September) and tests will be on the Friday afternoon of the same week. The spellings given are words related to the class theme and words with a focus on a particular word rule e.g. suffixes, prefixes, singular, plural rather than the actual words. So when practicing them please emphasise the rule e.g. adding -ing.

Big Talk
Big Talk will be sent home on Tuesdays to be discussed in preparation for Big Write, which will now take place on Thursdays due to swimming.

Homework
Homework is the learning logs, a new learning target will be put into the books every fortnight (starting from 14th September) and your child will have 2 weeks to fill the 2 pages with anything they think relates to the learning target, the deadline date will be at the bottom of the target.
I would be very grateful if you could encourage your child to complete every piece of homework and to hand it in on time. It is essential for your child to get into a routine before they start high school.

Reading
Please make sure your child reads their school reading book at home. I would like them to read everyday, and if you could please write a small comment about what they have read and sign it in their reading journal. We will aim to listen to your child read at school once a week (reading timetable attached) so please ensure your child brings their book and reading record on their designated reading day. Your child can change their own book mid week if necessary, the time for this is between 8.50 and 9am (your children are aware of this).

We are now working from the newly revised National Curriculum (details of which you can find on the school website).

This term our class theme is Homes, so all our subjects will be related to this. Here are some of the activities we will be doing this term;
Literacy
Information texts and stories from other cultures and traditions / Poetry and persuasive texts
Maths
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, shape, area, data handling and fractions.

Science
Electricity and states of matter.

Finally, can you please ensure your child has an indoor pair of pumps.

I am aware that there is a lot of information included in this letter! If any of the
information is unclear, or if you have any further queries regarding your child, please do not hesitate to see me.

Kind regards,

Mrs M L Quinn
